Managing weeds in pasture can be difficult when the plants you want to remove are growing among vegetation you want to keep. Conventional spraying treats an area broadly, which can mean applying herbicide beyond the weeds themselves.

Weed wiping takes a different approach. Instead of distributing herbicide across the paddock, the equipment makes direct contact with taller plants. This makes it particularly useful in situations where unwanted vegetation rises above the surrounding pasture.

Understanding the Weed Wiper

A weed wiper is an agricultural implement designed to transfer herbicide to plants through direct contact. Rather than using spray nozzles, it uses absorbent wicks or wiping surfaces that are kept moist with the treatment solution.

The wiping mechanism is positioned at a selected height. As the machine moves through the paddock, plants that extend into the wiping zone come into contact with the treated surface. Shorter pasture generally remains below it.

This difference in plant height is central to the method. The equipment is not intended to treat every plant in its path; it is designed to take advantage of the physical separation between taller weeds and desirable vegetation.

The same basic equipment may be referred to as a wick wiper or wick applicator.

How Contact-Based Application Works

The operation of a weed wiper involves more than simply filling a tank and driving across a paddock. The condition of the weeds, the amount of liquid reaching the wiping surface and the height of the mechanism all affect the result.

Preparing the Treatment

The herbicide used must be approved for the intended application and prepared in accordance with its label. Wiper applications can have different requirements from conventional spraying, so rates and directions should never be assumed to be interchangeable.

The correct product and application method also depend on the weed being targeted and the pasture situation. Following the label is therefore an important part of both effectiveness and safe use.

Keeping the Wiping Surface Moist

The wicks need a consistent supply of treatment solution so that contact with the plant transfers enough product. At the same time, excessive liquid can drip from the applicator and reach vegetation beneath it.

Manufacturers use different systems to regulate the flow of liquid. Before operating the equipment, it is worth understanding how the particular machine maintains moisture across its wiping surfaces.

Making Contact With Resistant Foliage

Some equipment incorporates a mechanism that disturbs plants shortly before they reach the wicks. The purpose is to improve contact with foliage that may otherwise be difficult for the treatment to penetrate.

This can be useful with certain weeds that have firm or waxy leaves, although results will vary according to the plant, its condition and the treatment being applied.

Adjusting to Pasture Height

The wiping mechanism needs to sit in the narrow space between the weeds and the pasture canopy. This is why height adjustment is such an important part of the process.

If it is positioned too low, desirable pasture can be contacted. If it is positioned too high, the target weeds may simply pass underneath it.

Conditions can also change within a paddock, so an adjustment that works in one area may not be suitable elsewhere. Checking the height during operation can help maintain consistent contact.

Allowing Enough Contact Time

The speed of travel influences how effectively the treatment is transferred to the weeds. Travelling too quickly can reduce contact, particularly where plants are dense or unevenly distributed.

There is no single speed that suits every machine or paddock. Terrain, weed growth and the design of the applicator all need to be considered, with the manufacturer's operating recommendations providing the starting point.

A second pass may sometimes be useful where dense growth makes it difficult to contact the plants from a single direction.

When the Method Makes Sense

The strongest application for weed wiping is where there is a clear height difference between unwanted plants and desirable pasture.

Tall, upright pasture weeds can be suitable targets, as can some broadleaf weeds, rushes, bracken and woody regrowth. Species such as giant rat's tail grass, African lovegrass, serrated tussock, thistles and silverleaf nightshade are examples of vegetation that may be encountered in Australian pasture-management situations.

However, the presence of a particular weed does not automatically mean wiping is the best control method. The growth stage, density and height of the plants all matter.

Land managers may sometimes use grazing or mowing to alter the relative height of vegetation before wiping. The objective is to create enough separation for the applicator to reach the unwanted plants without contacting the pasture.

Where weeds remain at the same level as the desirable vegetation, the advantage of a height-based applicator largely disappears. In those circumstances, another weed-control approach may be more appropriate.

Selecting Equipment for Different Conditions

Not every weed wiper is designed for the same type of property. A small paddock with narrow access points presents different requirements from a large grazing property with uneven terrain.

Working width is one consideration, but it is not the only one. The ability of the machine to follow changes in ground level can be important on undulating country, while adjustable wiping heights become particularly useful when pasture conditions vary.

The construction of the frame and wheel assemblies also deserves attention, especially where equipment will regularly travel over rough ground. A machine that remains stable and maintains its wiping position is more likely to provide consistent contact.

Buyers should also establish exactly what is supplied with the machine. Tanks, pumps, liquid-delivery components and other equipment may not always be included in the same configuration.

For instance, Redback Agri's weed wiper range illustrates how machines can be configured for different working conditions. Its suitability for a particular property should be assessed against the property's terrain, pasture and intended use rather than simply the machine's size or price.

Managing Expectations After Application

A successful wiping operation does not necessarily produce an immediate visible change. The response depends on factors such as the weed species, plant activity, environmental conditions and treatment used.

Actively growing plants are generally better able to move systemic herbicides through their tissues than plants under stress. Visible symptoms can therefore take time to develop, and complete control may take considerably longer.

Perennial weeds can also require continued attention. Regrowth should be monitored rather than assuming that one treatment will permanently resolve the problem.

For this reason, wiping is better considered as part of a broader pasture-management strategy. Maintaining competitive pasture and combining appropriate control methods can help reduce the opportunity for weeds to establish again.

Is Weed Wiping Worth Considering?

Weed wiping is most valuable when the physical difference between the target weeds and the surrounding pasture can be used to the land manager's advantage.

It can reduce the need to treat an entire paddock when only taller plants need attention, but it is not a universal replacement for conventional spraying. Its effectiveness depends on suitable weed growth, accurate height adjustment, appropriate equipment and the correct treatment method.

For anyone considering a weed wiper, the key question is simple: are the weeds consistently tall enough to make reliable contact with the wiping surface while the pasture remains below it?

If the answer is yes, contact-based application may be a practical option to include in a broader weed-management program.
